DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT:
The project involved the
construction of a new single storey extension to the existing
main school building, plus demolitions, alterations and re-modelling
works to an adjacent part of the existing school to form a
new Children's Centre.
The extension has a total
internal floor area of 218m5 and accommodates a Multi-Function
Room, Family/Group Room, a new Lobby/Foyer and Reception,
a number of offices and stores plus new toilet facilities.
The building is of traditional construction with trench fill
foundations and a ground bearing concrete floor slab, with
radon protection features. The walls are load-bearing masonry
with a facing brickwork outer skin (including contrast brick
courses and feature cills, etc.) plus areas of cedar cladding
and aluminium windows and external doors. The roof is part
flat roof and part monopitch roof with a timber structure,
including glulam beams, and a single ply roof covering to
both parts.
The re-modelling works
to the existing building formed new rooms for age groups 0-2,
2-3 and 3-4 years. The works included the removal of existing
internal partitions to combine areas, the formation of openings
for new aluminium windows and doors within the existing external
walls and the construction of new toilet and kitchen facilities,
cloakrooms and stores.
The building was completed
and fitted out ready for use by the school including all finishes
and decorations. The building incorporated electrical installations
including telephone and computer wiring plus mechanical installations
including heating and ventilation. All service supplies, fire
alarm installation, telephone and computer systems were connected
back to the adjacent main school building.
Ancillary works included
simple landscaping, paving and drainage installations to the
new extension, plus improvements to the existing entrance
to the schools car park.
