DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT:
The project involved the
construction of a new two storey Music School on the site
of an original Junior School. The building has a total internal
floor area of 577m5 and accommodates a full height Auditorium,
seven classrooms, a library/recording studio, six prefabricated
music practice rooms re-positioned from an adjacent building
and six new dedicated practice rooms incorporating sound-proofing
features including specialist wall panels, doors and suspended
ceilings. Also included are offices, storage rooms and toilet
facilities.
The building is of traditional
construction with trench fill foundations, load-bearing masonry
walls with reconstructed stone outer skin and architectural
features, precast concrete floors, cut timber roof structure
and clay plain tile roof coverings. There is a steel frame
to the Auditorium with ancillary steelwork members as additional
supports in various positions, especially the roof space which
houses most of the plant for the mechanical installations.
Windows and external doors are purpose made aluminium, as
is the glazed link to the existing main building. There are
curved walls and associated windows to the Auditorium and
the main staircase.
The building was completed
and fitted out ready for use by the school including all finishes
and decorations. The building incorporated electrical installations
including heating and mechanical installations including intake
and extract ventilation. All service supplies, fire alarm
installation and computer systems were connected back to the
adjacent main school building.
Ancillary works included
simple landscaping, paving, ramps and drainage to the building.
